Man Utd have offered Michael Carrick contract extension – Glory
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has “secured an extension” to his contract at the club, according to the chief executive of suitors Perth Glory.
Carrick’s current deal at United runs out in the summer and the club have not yet announced an extended stay for the 34-year-old — although MUTV broadcaster and former player Paddy Crerand has said on air that the midfielder has already agreed a contract.
A-League club Perth Glory were hoping to make an audacious move for Carrick, because Richard Garcia, the Australian team’s captain, knows the United midfielder from the early days of their careers at West Ham United.
But that interest is now over, according to the club’s chief.
“It was a long shot opportunity due to Richard Garcia’s relationship with Michael,” Perth’s CEO Peter Filopoulos told FourFourTwo.
“Perth was an option for Michael Carrick as he was going through what he was going to do in his career had he not landed a new signature with Manchester United.
“We understand he’s now secured an extension with Manchester United so that’s off the table.”
Carrick has been at Old Trafford for ten years and has made 421 appearances, winning the Champions League with United in 2008 and lifting the FA Cup with captain Wayne Rooney at Wembley at the end of last season.
The former England midfielder’s situation was not helped by the uncertainty over the managerial situation until Jose Mourinho was finally appointed as the successor to Louis van Gaal.
Marcus Rashford and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have both already signed new deals since Mourinho took charge.
